Mexico is as Valuable as Its Trading Partners: President Sheinbaum

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has sent a clear and strong message to President-elect Donald Trump in a letter addressing issues critical to the bilateral relationship between the two countries. At a time when trade and migration tensions are palpable, Sheinbaum has urged Trump to reconsider the economic blockades imposed on Cuba and Venezuela, arguing that these measures have significant social and humanitarian consequences.

In her letter, Sheinbaum emphasized that “it is not with threats or tariffs that the migratory phenomenon or drug consumption in the U.S. will be addressed,” echoing her commitment to a human rights approach in managing migration.

Since the beginning of his campaign, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican exports if undocumented migration flows and drug trafficking are not controlled, a situation Sheinbaum considers detrimental to both economies.

The Mexican president highlighted the importance of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC) as an essential framework for strengthening economic integration in North America. According to her, the imposition of tariffs would only generate inflation and unemployment, affecting not only Mexico but also the U.S. and Canada.

During her public statements, Sheinbaum also stressed the need for cooperation and mutual understanding to address common challenges.

In addressing the issue of blockades against Cuba and Venezuela, she emphasized that these policies affect not only those countries but also impact migration northward, creating a cycle of humanitarian crises that requires a joint response.

The exchange between the two leaders occurs in a context where discussions on migration and trafficking of fentanyl have taken center stage. As Trump’s inauguration approaches, expectations about how these bilateral dynamics will evolve are high. Sheinbaum’s ability to maintain a firm stance while seeking collaborative solutions will be critical in defining the future of U.S.-Mexico relations.

With an eye on international cooperation and respect for human rights, Sheinbaum is positioned as a key figure in the search for a more humane and less punitive approach to migration policy, which could lay the foundations for a new chapter in relations between both nations. Communities affected by migration and drug trafficking will be alert to the next moves of their respective governments.
